Edo guber: No attack on collation centre at Oredo LGA, says INEC

The Impartial Nationwide Electoral Fee (INEC) says there was no assault on the collation centre in Oredo LGA of Edo state.

Chris Nehikhare, the state’s commissioner for communication and orientation, reportedly mentioned throughout a briefing that troopers had efficiently repelled the attackers and reclaimed the hijacked INEC collation centres.

“We’re right here this afternoon to inform you the ugly incident that’s occurring in Oredo and another native authorities areas,” Nehikhare was quoted as saying.

“However simply as I stepped in right here a couple of minutes in the past, we had been informed that troopers have recovered the Oredo and pushed the thugs out of the collation Centre.

“We need to encourage the navy to go throughout the 18 native authorities areas of the state and take possession of those collation centres.

“The knowledge we’re getting is that they’re planning to assault these collation centres particularly the strongholds of the PDP candidate.”

However Rotimi Oyekanmi, spokesperson to the INEC chairman, informed TheCable that “there was no assault”.

Yiaga Africa, a civil society organisation (CSO), had recognized eight LGAs in Edo, that are violence hotspots.

The LGAs are Ovia south-west, Ovia north-east, Egor, Oredo, Ikpoba Okha, Etsako west, Etsako east, Esan south-east.

The CSO mentioned its pre-election commentary revealed that there are patterns of thuggery, intimidation, violence, arson, hate speech, and proliferation of small and lightweight arms within the LGAs.

The Edo state governorship election is to be held on Saturday.
