No fewer than 36 muslim worshippers have misplaced their lives in a highway accident in Kaduna state on Monday.
The victims have been travelling to Saminaka to watch Eid-el-Maulud, a celebration marking the start of Prophet Muhammad.
The occasion organiser, Ahmad Dayyabu, instructed the BBC that the “overcrowded bus” collided with an oncoming truck close to Lere city.
An official from the Kaduna State Emergency Administration Company mentioned 36 individuals died within the accident.
Nonetheless, Dayyabu, mentioned the loss of life toll has risen to 40, with 31 others receiving medical care within the hospital.
“They departed from Kwandare, heading in the direction of Saminaka. After they reached Lere, a trailer truck collided with their automobile,” he mentioned.
“Our investigation reveals that 71 individuals have been on board the ill-fated bus.”
Official statistics point out that over 1,470 individuals died in highway accidents throughout Nigeria through the first quarter of 2024, averaging 16 deaths per day.
The federal government had declared Monday a public vacation to mark this 12 months’s Eid-el-Maulud.
